JPEG XL vs AVIF for web use-cases
Jake Archibald published a JPEG XL versus AVIF comparison on 15 October 2026, writing that JPEG XL has landed in all major browsers. For lossy photos, AVIF usually produces smaller files, with the best JPEG XL typically 15–25% larger at default effort and 6–20% larger at maximum effort. For screenshots, illustrations, and transparency, AVIF is much better. The author says he would currently default to AVIF 4:4:4 at the highest effort he can be bothered with.
Developers choosing image formats for the web can use these benchmark results to decide between AVIF and JPEG XL per use-case.
