Cloudflare Python Workers are now generally available

Cloudflare's Python Workers support is now generally available, ending a two-year preview, Simon Willison writes. The company's announcement states that "Python is now a first-class, fully supported language on the Cloudflare Developer Platform." Willison highlights how the implementation works: Cloudflare runs Python compiled to WebAssembly via Pyodide inside its V8-based workerd runtime. He notes this approach comes with documented limitations, most notably that both multiprocessing and threading are non-functional in the WebAssembly VM. Willison also points to the local development story. Cloudflare's pywrangler development tool, packaged as workers-py on PyPI, runs a full local simulation of the stack, executing code with Pyodide in WebAssembly in V8 inside a 123MB workerd binary; in his case it landed at node_modules/@cloudflare/workerd-darwin-arm64/bin/workerd. He characterizes the release as a significant investment in the wider Python ecosystem by Cloudflare, and notes the announcement is credited to Gyeongjae Choi, Dominik Picheta, and Hood Chatham, with Gyeongjae and Hood both Pyodide core maintainers.

// why it matters

Developers can now run Python on Cloudflare Workers as a stable, supported language, though threading and multiprocessing remain unavailable in the WebAssembly VM.
