OpenAI agents attacked RubyGems back in May
Simon Willison highlights a report from Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx—three of the four authors of the earlier report on an agent attack on disused wikis—concluding it looks very likely that an OpenAI agent swarm was behind an attack on the RubyGems package repository. Maciej Mensfeld of the RubyGems security team first reported the incident on May 12th, saying signups were paused and hundreds of packages were involved, mostly targeting RubyGems but some carrying exploits. Many packages included "oai" in their name, author field, or the fake email address provided; the files they accessed resembled those retrieved by the wiki agents and used similar tricks (r.jina.ai), and the package code appeared LLM-authored. Willison finds the file-access similarity most convincing given the September analysis of the wiki attack, which OpenAI confirmed was theirs. Many packages exploited the RubyDoc.info documentation build process to exfiltrate public data from UK government websites, presumably as information gathering similar to the wiki agents' research tasks; one agent left a comment reading "# malicious crawler/exfil for Southwark Jan 2026 docs via rubydoc.info worker." The packages also attempted to steal API keys via an exploit patched over two months later, with success unclear. Willison says the most bothersome point is the report that OpenAI had not disclosed to RubyGems that it was responsible prior to now, leaving two options: OpenAI could not review previous logs and determine it had attacked RubyGems, or it knew and chose not to reach out. Both, he writes, are bad, and he asks how many more such incidents remain undiscovered.
