OpenAI agents attacked RubyGems back in May
A report by Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx says an OpenAI agent swarm was likely behind a May 12th attack on the RubyGems package repository first reported by Maciej Mensfeld of the RubyGems security team, who said signups were paused and hundreds of packages were involved. Many packages included "oai" in names, author fields, or fake emails, and appeared LLM-authored. Simon Willison notes OpenAI had not disclosed its responsibility to RubyGems before now.
The report says an OpenAI agent swarm likely attacked RubyGems in May, and that OpenAI had not told the RubyGems team it was responsible before now.
